British Dice Shaker Set Comprised of Timber from H.M.S. Victory, Dated 1836
Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available.
This did not come from any Museum Collection that we are aware of. It came to us from a collector who purchased it many years ago in England as a curiosity. Oddly enough and as interesting as this is, it is not uncommon to see such relics from Britain's Glorious past.
This is a really cute little wooden lidded Dice Shaker complete with ivory dice and ivory "knob" to lid. Shaped as a Beer Keg it comes complete with carved hoops making it a most attractive set.
On the side is an old silver plaque engraved:
A Memento made from timber from H.M.S. VICTORY 1836
As a child my father gave me a chunk of Wood labeled as being a memento of the old London Bridge. Bridges get rebuilt and even serving Ships, (H.M.S. Victory is still regarded as a serving Naval Vessel), have to be repaired so OFF CUTS were often recycled into such souvenirs. This just happens to be a particularly attractive example of a one of a kind item. Very possibly used on board to ease the boredom of 19th century sea travel.
