Original U.S. WWII Era Bowie Style Knife With Named Sheath by Standard Cutlery Co

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a wonderful example of a private purchase of a seldom seen knife maker. After learning the business from their father Jean Case at Case Brothers, Elliott and Dean formed the Standard Knife Company on Fair Oak Street in 1901. Sales were brisk, with products manufactured by C. Platts & Sons and others, and the ultimate goal of expanding into manufacturing. Savvy marketing certainly helped: “If you’re found dead with a Standard Knife in your pocket, we will pay for your funeral.” But tragedy struck when Elliott returned from a sales trip with Typhoid fever, dying at 28 years old, leaving a widow and two small children. Dean was forced to return to Case Brothers, and the assorted family businesses bought Standard Knife’s inventory, evidenced by very rare W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery stickers covering, thus concealing, this late company’s packaging and brief existence.

This 8” clip point single edged knife does show signs of minor use but was definitely not abused by the user. The blade does have minor surface rust which could be removed easily if you would wish to do so. The grip scales on the handle appear to be made of stag horn, which are worn but are undamaged and attached to the hilt with 4 small steel rivets on each side. The ricasso is marked with STANDARD / CUTLERY CO.

The leather sheath appears to be original to the knife but had aluminum added to the drag and the throat. Unfortunately the belt loop is completely missing, leaving this sheath without a suspension method. The front side of the leather was personalized with a name and city of the original user:

H. M. STEWART
SANTA BARBARA

We have not been able to locate the service information for this individual, or even if they served in the military. As for Santa Barbara, this could be where he was from, a memorial for the Japanese attack at Santa Barbara, California or for the SS Santa Barbara which was torpedoed and sunk by German Submarine U-504 on June 11, 1942.

The knife and sheath are in a lovely used and worn condition, a perfect addition to any edged weapons collection.

Comes more than ready for display.
