Original U.S. WWII Era Blue Star Mother's Service Banner with 24 Stars & Gold Fringe - 57" x 33

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. A service flag or service banner is a banner that family members of those serving in the United States Armed Forces can display. The flag or banner is officially defined as a white field with a red border, with a blue star for each family member serving in the Armed Forces of the United States during any period of war or hostilities.  The banner was designed in 1917 by U.S. Army Captain Robert L. Queisser of the Fifth Ohio Infantry, in honor of his two sons who were serving in World War I.

This fine WWII example is made from multiple pieces of wool fabric, and measures 57 x 33 inches. The flag has a maker tag on the rear of the header:

HIRSCH & ALLEN
Flag Headquarters
= 330 DARBY ROAD =
= UPPER DARBY, PA. =

The flag is in very good condition, with no real damage or mothing, just the usual age toning. It has a very nice rayon gold fringe on the bottom, and it has 24 rayon stars sewn into the white field. Normally, the number of stars would equal the number of family members currently serving, however it is very unlikely that one mother would have 24 children in service, let alone 24 children altogether. This may have been a flag flown from an apartment building or other multi-family location, and represented the children from several families.

In excellent condition and ready to add to your collection!
