Original Victorian Jade Handled Kukri Knife Presented to British Diplomat George Jamieson 1865

Item Description

Original Item: One Only. The Gurkha Kukri (Nepali: खुकुरी khukuri) is possibly the most recognizable and famous fighting knife ever developed. Indigenous to the mountain Kingdom of Nepal, home of the Gurkhas who were "absorbed" into the British sphere of influence with the Treaty of Seguli in 1816. These ferocious fighters were infamous for their valor and for using the kukri an amazing "Tool of Death". It is a forward leaning leaf shaped blade, which provided the user with leveraged striking power. The kukri was became an everyday tool as much as it was a deadly weapon. Introduced long before the British arrived in the early 19th century, the Kukri became standard equipment for Gurkha Regiments serving in the British Army.

The design then became popular and spread throughout the British Sphere of Influence, which during the Victorian Era was an Empire on which the sun never set. More upmarket versions were produced, intended more for signs of status and as gifts.

Here we have one such example, a very up-market small kukri, featuring a high quality forged steel blade, and an exquisite Jade handle. The blade is marked G. JAMIESON on the blade ricasso, indicating presentation to British Victorian Era Diplomat George Jamieson. Born 5 February 1843, Jamieson later attended Aberdeen University, where he received a Master’s degree in 1864, and joined the China Consular Service through the nomination of the university in the same year. He then spent the majority of his Diplomatic service in China, while still returning to England and becoming a Barrister at the same time. A Jade-handled Kukri would certainly have been a very smart accessory while working in China.

A very smart looking presentation Kukri, ready to research and display!
