Original German WWII Named USGI Cut Off Cap Insignia Grouping Attached To Letter Mailed Home

Item Description

Original Item: One-of-a-Kind Set. This is a fantastic "Mailed Home" grouping, consisting of some German WWII cap insignia glued to a letter mailed home to his mother by Pfc. Elmer W. Cary, ASN 36197052. Per NARA records, Cary was born 1919 in Michigan, and enlisted in the U.S. Army in Kalamazoo, Michigan on April 21st, 1942. The letter itself id dated May 25, 1945, and indicates that at the time Cary's posting was:

Battery A. (Security Detach.)
353 Anti-Aircraft Artillery
Searchlight Battalion

The letter is more of a chronicle than a single greeting, and details various aspects of his service, as well as where he was located at the given time. Part of it seems to detail items that Cary's mother may have sent to him, as well as items he purchased for personal use. by May 24th, Cary was in Worms, Germany immediately after war ended. He even does some simple math to illustrate how much time it takes for letters sent from home to reach him through the military mail service. Definitely a great wartime account!

On the back of the letter, there are some German WWII cap insignia attached, complete with captions describing them. The upper set is a standard late war BeVO Reichsadler Eagle and Cockade set, as would be used on M38 or M42 Field caps. The caption on this one reads:

The above two were sewed together on a cap. A railroadman 2 believe. It was removed by the wife & girl of its owner.

The lower insignia is an RAD Reich Labor Service cap insignia, with the caption:

This from a cap and large one from clothing taken May 12. 1945.

There is a reference to a "large" insignia, but we do not know if this references the other insignia attached to the letter, or something else that was lost over time.

Really a great WWII Mailed Home set with some nice research potential and a great story! Ready to research and display!
