Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is a rare find to come across! This is an Ames Model 1847 Sappers and Miners sword bayonet for use with the Springfield Model 1847 Musketoon. The musketoon is a shorter barrelled version of the musket and served in the roles of shotgun or carbine. The Model 1847 musketoon was produced in three variants, called the Artillery, Cavalry, and Sappers (engineers) models.

These well-made sword bayonets were produced from 1847 through 1856 for the Springfield Model 1847 Sappers & Miners musketoon, of which only 830 total arms were manufactured.

This bayonet from the first year of production, features a 21-1/2″ double edged blade. One side of the ricasso is marked US / N.W.P. and the other with the N. P. AMES / CABOTVILLE / 1847. The handle is of cast brass with thick cross-guard having teardrop shaped quillons. On one side of the cross-guard is the remains of the brass ring-socket that slid onto the musketoon barrel with a rotating steel locking ring. The ring-socket was cut off for some reason at an unknown time but appears to be period done. The grip is fish-scale pattern with a swelled pommel that has a slot for the bayonet lug.

The condition of the bayonet shows signs of service wear and use. The blade retains an even tarnished-silver patina with moderate pitting, heavier toward the point. Edges are good with a few expected nicks. Handle has a few minor nicks & dings, shows moderate wear and retains a medium bronze patina on the exposed surfaces with darker patina in the scales of the grip.

A wonderful bayonet that comes ready for further research and display.
