Item Description

Original Items: Only One Available. We have available the uniform of Staff Sergeant Russell W. Barns, who served as a member of the 3rd Ranger Battalion in the Italian Theater of Operations during the Second World War. Some of the most sought after material in the field of World War Two collectibles are those associated with elite forces, be it American, German, British, and so on. Within the field of U.S. collecting, items attributed to U.S. Army Rangers are certainly some of the most sought after, and surprisingly the lesser found, of America’s elite forces of WWII.

The uniform features Italian handmade embroidered 3rd Ranger Battalion scrolls on both shoulders. The detail in the scrolls is beautiful and retained perfectly. The rank chevrons on each side matches the same stitching used to attach the scrolls, so they were definitely done by the same soldier. The left shoulder features a lovely First Special Service Force “red, white and blue” shoulder cord. The left breast has a lovely array of ribbons including a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct, EAME with 1 Arrowhead and 4 stars and last a WWII Victory Medal. Above the ribbons is a beautifully tarnished Combat Infantry Badge. The right side has a Ruptured Duck honorable discharge patch.

The right lower sleeve has a “USA / CANADA” patch for the First Special Service Force. The 1st Special Service Force was an elite American–Canadian commando unit in World War II, under the command of the United States Fifth Army. The unit was organized in 1942 and trained at Fort William Henry Harrison near Helena, Montana in the United States. The Force served in the Aleutian Islands, and fought in Italy, and southern France before being disbanded in December 1944.

The overseas cap is in lovely condition and is original to the uniform as it has Barns’ laundry number stamped on the sweat band. The dog tags are without damage and can be read as
