Original U.S. WWII Army Air Force Map of Yokohama Harbor showing Post Surrender Updates

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is something fantastic! We've never had a map like this before, and they seem to be very hard to come by.  This is a WWII Paper map of the Japanese port city of Yokohama, marked REPRODUCED BY THE 69th ENGR. TOPO. CO. AUG,1945. This is just prior to the surrender of Japan in WWII. Beneath this are updates in black pencil, dated in hand (11/22/45). It measures 20" x 22.5", and is in very good condition.

What makes this map great is that it has been updated with text and colored pencil, indicating which areas of the city were intact, and which were "COMPLETELY OR ALMOST COMPLETELY BOMBED OUT." Towards the end of the war, the Japanese Air Force was effectively annihilated, so U.S. Bombers had free reign in their efforts to bomb Japan into agreeing to an unconditional surrender.

Certain areas however were avoided, to be used for the possible eventual combat landing, or landings once Japan had capitulated.

The map indicates the course of the ship USS Admiral H. T. Mayo, as it went into the harbor and docked. It seems that the person who updated the map was on this ship, which was a transport, and had arrived on it, and then stayed in Yokohama at the Mitsubishi Office. The USS Mayo then presumably left, and continued to transport troops home.

A great piece of WWII memorabilia, with lots of research potential. These don't show up often at all!
