Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Each State was required to provide a Militia force both for it's own security and if needed for National Defense should the need arise as it did in 1812. This was by Act of Congress in the 1790's and within a few years all States had done so.
Here we have a really nice example of a typical M-1816 Flintlock Musket, still in its original Flintlock. It is 56 1/2" in overall length with a 42" barrel. The musket has its original full length walnut stock with all iron mounts. It is completely unmarked, which is not uncommon, or it has had its maker markings removed. It does however have the standard brass pan in the lock, so it is very possibly U.S. military production. See the wonderful publication UNITED STATES MARTIAL FLINTLOCKS by ROBERT M. REILLY a definitive work which provides all the information on these contracts and issues. It is an invaluable publication when dealing with this era of United States Arms production.
This musket has been fully cleaned and is in excellent condition. There is evidence of an old repair on the stock wrist but it is not easily noticeable. There is also the "GHOST" of an Inspector's cartouche in a circle on the left side of the stock opposite the lock, the usual type of marking seen on state militia muskets. A rather picturesque brass raised image of the HEAD OF LIBERTY has been added, by some owner, on the left side of the butt stock.
Truly excellent and ready to display!
