Original Item: Only One Available. Public relations specialists advised the U.S. Government that the most effective war posters were the ones that appealed to the emotions. The poster shown here played on the public's fear of the enemy as well as the fear of “giving in” to their rhetoric.

During the Second World War, a wide range of interest groups commissioned posters for the war effort. This image was commissioned by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and warned the population to be aware of the efforts of our enemies to create animosity and dissension among Americans at home. It is a strong image created in the interest of protecting the domestic population.

This 21 ¾” x 16 ½” poster shows greenish caricatures of Tojo and a man with a distinct mustache (AH) whispering in the ear of an American, telling obvious political lies to stir racial and religious unrest. The poster is mostly yellow with very little contrasting colors to help the image stand out more, to grab the attention of those passing by. The message displayed on the poster, below the caricatures is as follows:

ENEMY PROPAGANDA
AGAINST OUR GOVERNMENT
AGAINST OUR ALLIES
AGAINST CATHOLICS, JEWS
or PROTESTANTS

The poster is in lovely condition and is slightly worn on the edges but without extensive damage. The creases present are from the original fold marks made during the distribution process during the war.
