Original Item: Only One Available. By the mid-Victorian period of the 1870s, Spain did not have much of an Empire left to speak of. Their South American Colonies were all independent and only some S.E. Asian holdings, mainly the Philippines, and Cuba in the Caribbean remained.
This is an exceedingly rare machete bayonet to be sure. We have seen one in the Spanish Army museum, but otherwise this is the first example we have seen. The original brass handle retains some amount of shine to it and contains minimal denting or chipping, and next to no patina showing.
It is etched on the ricasso:-

and on the reverse:-

This indicates 1864 manufacture in the weapons factories of the legendary Sword-Making city of Toledo, which has a history going back to 500 BCE, and supplied blades to the Roman Legions. There is also a 3159 serial number at the top of the grip near the crossguard. Guard and locking ring show minimal wear and hardly any rust.
The blade has some light pitting in some scattered spots and some blackening from being handled over the years. There is also a large fuller, and the tip has been fairly blunted.
This machete bayonet could’ve possibly been used in between the second (1846-1849) and third (1872-1876) Carlist wars: the Chincha Islands War (formerly the Spanish-South American War) that lasted from 1865-1866, a conflict with Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Chile that primarily concentrated on liberating Peru’s Chincha Island of their vast reserves of guano; or the Ten Years War ( 1868-1878 ) that saw Cuba trying to liberate itself from Spain.
A highly sought after item for the serious collector of bayonets, machetes, or Spanish militaria. Very possibly a War Trophy taken home from Cuba after the Spanish American War of 1898. Ready to display!
