Original Hungarian Brass Hilted Infantry Sword Attributed to “Trenck’s Pandurs” with Brass Mounted Leather Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: One of a Kind. Just acquired from a U.S. Collection, this is a most interesting sword/saber. Classic Hungarian lines with 31 1/2" slightly curved blade retaining traces of its original Hungarian style engraving. Single brass hand guard complete with wire bound leather covered wood grip, the sword measures 36" in overall length.

The Pandurs were a skirmisher unit (light infantry) of the Habsburg Monarchy, raised by Baron Franz von der Trenck following a charter issued by Maria Theresa of Austria on 27 February 1741, permitting Trenck to raise a 1,000-strong troop. The unit was largely composed of men enlisted as volunteers from areas of the Kingdom of Slavonia and Slavonian Military Frontier, consisting of ethnic Croats and Serbs. The Pandurs saw military action in Silesia, Bohemia, Bavaria and France. Other similar Pandur units were raised in Europe during the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Interestingly BARON FRANZ TRENCK who raised the Regiment was arrested in 1746 and imprisoned in SPIELBERG CASTLE where he died in 1749. The Regiment was then renamed the 53RD. INFANTRY REGIMENT and remained as such until it was disbanded in 1919.

A Classic Hungarian style weapon dating back possibly 280 years. Complete with Scabbard.

Exceptionally rare and ready to display.
