Original Spanish Bronze Two Pounder Swivel Cannon Taken from the Treasure Ship SANTA BRIGIDA in 1799

Item Description

Original Item: One of a Kind: The SANTA BRIGIDA was a Spanish Treasure Galleon captured by the British in 1799 which contained the greatest amount of treasure ever reported to the British Admiralty up until that time, a staggering 618,040.00. British Pounds worth THEN! In today's money many tens of Millions, perhaps a hundred million U.S. Dollars!

Captured after a long chase by CAPTAIN HENRY DIGBY of H.M.S. ALCMENE with H.M.S. TRITON supporting. So much prize money was awarded that Captain Digby himself netted over 40,000.00. English Pounds ! (approaching $ 5 Million in today's cash).

Captain Digby went on to command H.M.S AFRICA at the BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR in 1805. Born in 1770 he joined the Royal Navy at 14 years of age as a Midshipman rising to Admiral of the Blue before his death in 1842 aged 72 years.

The Swivel Cannon is truly beautifully made, just 19 1/2" in total length and just 6" wide at it's widest point, the trunions. The bore is a huge 2 1/2" translating this to be a TWO Pounder, also known as a "FALCON". The bore is cylindrical, and the back of the chamber is round. There is also a small pan bolted around the touch hole to hold additional powder.

Across the top of the rear end of the barrel there is an old SILVER Plaque 3" X 2 1/4" stating:-

The Spanish Ship
SANTA BRIGIDA"
On October 16th. 1799.
by
Captain Henry Digby
and the Seamen
of

Actually this Swivel was recovered from the attic of the Digby family many years ago and was clearly a memento that Henry Digby had retained commemorating his victory.

Weighs approximately 50lbs, ready to display!
