Original British Napoleonic Tower Flintlock Light Dragoon Pistol marked to 14th Light Dragoons - circa 1800

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This Flintlock Pistol dates to prior the Battle of Waterloo, however the 14th Light Dragoons did NOT take part in the great battle that finally defeated Napoleon Bonaparte in 1815. The Regiment was raised in 1715 by Brigadier James Dormer in response to the Jacobite Rebellion, and in 1751 it was re-designated to be the 14th Regiment of Light Dragoons. In 1798 it was renamed :-

14th (The Duchess of York's Own) Regiment of (Light) Dragoons

During the Napoleonic Wars, the Regiment served in Portugal from 1808, and accompanied the British Army Commander Arthur Wellesley right up to 1813. They fought at all the major Battles: Oporto, Talavera, Venta de Serra, Fuentes d'Onoro, Salamanca, Vitterio, Ortes and Toulouse before returning to England. They had been recalled, only to be shipped off to New Orleans in time to surrender at the great battle that ended the Anglo/American War of 1812.

The pistol is a standard full stocked flintlock pistol, used by British Light Dragoons across the empire. The Lock Plate is marked (CROWN) / G.R. under the pan, with TOWER across the tail, indicating production at the Tower armory for military use. The top of the barrel is marked 14. L - D and also A / 27, indicating it came from the 14th Light Dragoons, Company A, the 27th trooper. The Trigger guard is also marked 14 / LD / A / 27.

The ramrod is brass mounted walnut and not of the 'swivel" type later introduced as the New Land Pattern, which was based on East India Company innovations.

In fine tight and all original condition showing no restoration in fine condition. 9" .65" smooth bore barrel bearing faint British Proof Marks. The hammer face shows some old pitting marks but otherwise this is just fine.

Absolutely original, a highly desirable Flintlock Dragoon Pistol from the Napoleonic Wars!
