Original 19th Century Arabic Marked Percussion Pistol with Damascus Barrel and Faux British Proof

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Dating from about 1835-1840, this Large bore single shot boxlock percussion pistol measures 12" in overall length and has a 6" damascus style octagonal barrel. The frame is highly engraved and bears what appears to be an attempt at a British Proof Stamp on the left hand side. However, it is definitely just an imitation.

The grip is fluted in the continental style and has a decorated brass butt cap. The back strap of the pistol from the rear of the hammer all the way down to the butt cap is engraved with Arabic script, the usual writing system used in Islamic countries. The pistol functions, however the lock needs adjustment, as it fires at half cock, and the trigger pull required at full cock is excessive.

Presumably intended for self defense, European style pistols from this era rarely ever bear Islamic inscriptions. This one reads عمال حبيب عطا on the rear of the grip, which a very nice customer has told us translates to : "the work of Habib Atta".  We have not been able to find any information on this maker, making this a great research opportunity.

In nice polished condition ready to display!
