Original U.S. Vietnam Theater Made Flight Helmet Bag Named to C-130E Hercules Crewman

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Since the early days of warfare, soldiers abroad are always on the hunt for locally made and sourced items to either use or bring home after the war. That was the case for Phillip Wayne Sanders who was either a crewman or a pilot on a C-130E “Hercules” they affectionately named “Sandy”. The crew named themselves the “Bamboo Squad Cambodia Gunrunners”, which is seen embroidered on the top flap of the kit bag, directly across from “SANDY C-130 E” which is also embroidered on the top flap on the opposite side. On both sides of the bag are patches sewn into it. One patch, a rather large one, is of southeast asia with what appears to be the aircraft's flight pattern marked with black stitching going from Cambodia to north Vietnam. The opposite side of the bag has 2 patches. The top patch looks like a locally made patch in the shape of a shield with a cobra wrapped around Thailand, with U-Tapao marked in red. Below the shield patch is a circular patch with a peace sign in the middle with multiple flags in each space of the sign. Around the border, in white lettering, “Participant, South East Asia War Games” is embroidered. On the front facing portion of the bag, above the pocket on the pocket flap, Phillip Wayne Sanders who we assume is the name of the crewman who utilized this bag, is embroidered.

The condition of the bag shows signs of being used heavily. The color of the canvas has faded slightly, the yellow of the embroidery is slightly darkened due to age and use, the patches are still colorful and easily identifiable. The stitching on some of the seams is starting to come loose but appears to still be solid in construction. The only damage to be seen is a portion of the fabric where the zipper position would be if the bag was zipped shut, there's fraying in that location. The only other “damage” would be that the top cinch strap was shortened and stitched to help prevent further fraying of the cut end.

All in all this is a wonderful theater made piece that would be welcomed in any Vietnam war collectors showcase!
