Original U.S. Spanish American War Marine Corps Model 1898 Khaki Tropical Uniform Coat with Period Tropical Weight Shirt - USMC

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Scarce Spanish-American War to 1912 Era U.S. Marine Corps Khaki Tropical Coat. This Uniform most likely dates from 1898-1904 period, and was first fielded by Marines in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. This has a 1 ½” tall standing collar. Specifications from this period are particularly murky, but from what we have found, this is an earlier pattern jacket. Of note are the lower pockets, which was not standard at that time. They do, however, match the age and wear of the rest of the coat. Perhaps this was a tailor made garment and the lower pockets were added at the request of the Marine… we are not sure. The coat is devoid of all markings.  For some, these circa 1900 khaki coats are considered the “holy grail” for collectors of U.S. Marine Corps material.

A Pre-WWI period tropical weight khaki shirt is included with the coat, just as it came. The shirt is similar to the wool issue shirt of the Pre-WWI/WWI period. Both Jacket and shirt match condition from wear, age, and storage. Numerous stains, and areas of wear are evident on both garments. Buttons on the coat may be replacements. They are easily removed by the means of a wire “S” hook.

Excellent opportunity to add this scarce early US Marine Corps piece to your collection! These do not turn up often!
