Original U.S. Revolutionary War British Short Land Pattern Dublin Castle Brown Bess Flintlock Musket marked to 18th Reg't of Foot

Regular price $34,995.00

Item Description

Original Item: One of a Kind. This is a stunning British "Short Land Pattern" Regimentally marked Brown Bess Flintock musket, featuring the 42" barrel first adopted by Dragoons 1740. In 1768 it became the standard infantry musket, and remained so until 1797, when the Third or "India Pattern" took over. This was the standard Musket of the line during the entire U.S. Revolutionary war, so there's a good chance it was involved.

This example has a lovely walnut stock, which still retains the "bannister rail" butt stock, a feature that was basically done away with after 1807. The musket has a full 42" regulation length, .75" smoothbore iron barrel, which bears British Proof Marks, which are still mostly clear. They include the British CROWN / GR and CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS for manufacture in Birmingham, England. The stock is fitted with the correct FOUR ramrod pipes and correct all brass mounts.

The "two screw" lock plate is fully marked with CROWN / G.R. mid lock for King George III, with DUBLIN / CASTLE on the tail, for manufacture and assembly in Ireland. The lock surface has the correct curved profile of Pre-1777 manufacture, which later turned to be flattened. The lock has a swan neck cock, indicating pre-1808 construction. Action is strong and holds at half cock, firing correctly at full cock, though it requires a strong trigger pull.

The barrel marked on the top with Roman numerals XVIII REGT, for issue to the 18th Regiment of Foot. The butt plate tang is marked D / 24 indicating issue to the 24th man of "D" Company. There is also L-Y 8120 on butt plate tang, being the nineteenth century Registration mark when all guns in Ireland were "registered" for the British Government.

The lovely all original walnut stock is complete with sling swivels and the correct iron ramrod. It has the correct "swell" just rear of the first ramrod pipe. There are some cracks in the stock, very common for muskets of this age. There are several in the buttstock, which were repaired long ago. There are also some cracks and splitting in the fore stock, which we have left intact as part of the muskets long history.

The 18th Regiment was raised in 1684 by the Earl of GRANARD as the Royal Regiment of Ireland, and saw action during the Nine Years War in Europe at the end of the 17th century. The regiment was then for the most part garrisoned in Ireland and England, and in 1751 it was redesignated THE 18TH REGIMENT OF FOOT, though it did not see any action during the Seven Years War.

The regiment was then posted to PHILADELPHIA, where it arrived July 11th 1767 and served as garrison troops for close to 8 years. It was later transferred to BOSTON around 1772-1773 where it was present for the start of the American Revolution. It took part in the actions at LEXINGTON and CONCORD with 2 Killed and four wounded. It took part in the BATTLE OF BUNKER HILL where it had 3 Killed and eight wounded including Lt. RICHARDSON. In July 1776 the remains of the Regiment were transferred to the 8th KING's Regiment under the command of Captain Hugh Lord and moved to DETROIT. Thereafter they were shipped to Nova Scotia before going to Dover Castle in England.
