Original British P-1855 Sappers & Miners Quillback Sword Bayonet with Scabbard for Lancaster Carbine

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is extremely rare, especially since it has NOT been modified as so many were in later years. The bayonet featured a quill back blade of 24", a hilt frame made entirely out of brass with hard rubber/leather checkered grip plates to either side. The bright shiny blade bears the Knight's Head stamping of the German Solingen firm of Carl Reinhard KIRSCHBAUM, who lived from 1818-1862. His company made a lot of edged weapons for the British Government at that time, and the Kirschbaum name is well-known in the edged weapon world to this day.

The brass pommel is stamped with the sword's Regimental designation and unit number:

V
Y W E 2
559

We believe that ths perhaps indicates V for Volunteer, Y.W. for Yorkshire West Riding, E-2 battalion and 559th man. The blade also bears British acceptance and proof markings and a PAIR of facing BROAD ARROWS over an acceptance mark to certify that this weapon was "officially" SOLD OUT OF SERVICE. Condition of the blade is very good, with just a few small areas of pitting, and no dents or dings. It is still unsharpened, as issued.

The fine substantial leather scabbard is in great shape with a little loss to stitching and comes complete with it's heavy top and bottom brass mounts. The leather is supple, though could use a good conditioning. No tears or major issues that we can see.

Overall an extremely rare bayonet with scabbard to find for the Charles Lancaster Oval Bore Carbine in its original unaltered state. Ready to display.
