Original Item: Only One Available. This old fowling piece has literally recently come out of someone's Attic! Dating from the late 18th century 1780-1800 it is half stocked and carved with an impressive wooden trigger guard carved out of the stock blank at the time. It measures 60" in overall length with a 44" barrel. The Barrel is heavily inlaid with gold stands of arms and foliage designs for it's FULL length, some of which near the lock is now absent.
The ignition system is the typical Spanish Miquelet Lock. The lock is of very high quality and totally complete. It also has a half-cock safety of very ingenious design, though it does need some adjustment, and will not fire correctly at present. Usually pulling the trigger would retract the safety, but in this case it does not, so the hammer does not move forward to strike the pan. There is no apparent Maker's name but that may have been lost from the rear top of the barrel together with the missing gold inlay.
The wood stock is checkered at the wrist and the very tarnished brass butt plate is nailed on in common 18th century style. There is a very old small hole in the fore stock near the front checkering. The wood ramrod may be a later working replacement.
The total gun has been very carefully cleaned, not filled, not buffed in any way. It is a TOTAL SLEEPER having quietly aged in a closet or attic for maybe some 200 years.

History of the Miquelet Lock:
Miquelet lock is a modern term used by collectors and curators, largely in the English speaking world, for a type of firing mechanism used in muskets and pistols. It is a distinctive form of snaplock, originally as a flint-against-steel ignition form, once prevalent in Spain, Portugal, Italy, the Balkans, North Africa, Ottoman Empire and throughout Spain's colonies from the late 16th to the mid 19th centuries.
The term miquelet lock was not recorded until the 19th century, long after the appearance of the mechanism in the 16th century, and is of uncertain origin. One commonly held view is that it was coined by British troops in the Peninsular War to describe the style of musket used by the Miquelet (militia) that had been assigned to the Peninsular Army of the Duke of Wellington.
