Original Imperial Russian Caucasian Kindjal Dagger with Gold Inlaid Blade & Scabbard - Remounted

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. A kindjal (translated from the Russian Кинжал) is a double-edged dagger often with a single off-set groove on each face of the blade. The shape of the weapon is similar to the ancient Greek Xiphos, the Roman Gladius, or the Scottish dirk; and has been used as a secondary weapon in Georgia and the Caucasus since ancient times.

This presents very nicely and the blade is somewhat older than usually encountered. It looks to have been remounted at some point into a composite material grip. The tang of the blade extends to the first mounting pin, with the rest a separate piece, probably broken before the remounting.

This example has a blade length just under 16 1/2" and is 20 3/4" in overall length. The blade has a single off center fuller to each side, giving the blade cross section somewhat of an "S" shape. The wider portion of each side has some lovely gold inlay, still retained after many years of age. One side also has a small armorer's / makers mark, and the edges are still relatively sharp, so handle with care.

The kindjal comes with a very nice leather covered wooden scabbard, which is almost certainly not the first scabbard it was fitted with. Still it shows significant age, so it was not produced any time in the recent past.

A great example of the classic short sword / dagger of the Caucasian mountain area. Ready to display!
