Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. The Sturmabteilung-Wehrmannschaft (Storm Division Military Team) was the military training defense group of the SA and was formed in 1939. The purpose of this organization was to provide military training to SA members before and after their military service. This quickly expanded to all civilian males aged 18 to 65 years old, and by May, 1944, over 3 million Germans had participated in this program. The group also served as an internal defense unit. Originally, standard S.A. uniforms and headgear were worn until the official introduction of a S.A.-W. uniform in December 1939.

This is a very good condition example of a hard to find German WWII SA-Wehrmannschaft Feldmütze (SA-Defense Team Field Cap), most likely the first that we have had the pleasure of offering. We previously have had one of the earlier overseas caps, however this is the later Field Cap, modeled very much after the Italian "Bustina" style cap. This design is somewhat similar to the early overseas caps with a fold down flap, however instead of fastening in the front of the cap, the flaps fasten over the top.

This example is constructed of SA Brown HBT woven cotton exterior, which has the distinctive BeVo machine embroidered SA-Wehrmannshaft triangular insignia on the left side, featuring a silver Reichsadler eagle on a yellow background. This insignia does look to have been re applied post war, probably after having been "sanitized". The front of the cap has a metal cockade with the SA emblem in the center over a red felt background.

The cap features a very nice lightweight olive green brushed cotton liner, which is size stamped 55 on the left side. It features a gray pressed paper faux leather sweatband around the entire circumference, which is still in very good condition, showing wrinkling and some tears. The rear of the sweatband where it overlaps has torn through at the stitching, and is a bit folded up.

Under the sweatband on the rear right is an original fabric RZM tag, which is also in great shape. The tag identifies the cap as an SA.-Wehrmann-Mütze (SA Defense Team Cap), and features the RZM logo on the right. The tag is marked with an ink stamped numerical designation of the Hersteller (manufacturer) A1/1487 *, along with lot number, 037379.

The cap is in very good condition, showing just a bit of wear and light staining, with no mothing or fabric pulling that we can see. The main condition issues are the pressed paper sweatband, and the SA insignia on the front, which is oxidized and damaged a bit on the right side.

A lovely example of a very hard to find SA Military Team "Bustina" Field cap, ready to display!

The SA, Sturmabteilung (Storm Division), were originally formed in August of 1921 as a protective guard unit for the political leaders of the fledgling NSDAP Party. As with the NSDAP, "Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei" (National-socialist German Worker’s-party), the SA was structured along para-military lines. Most of its recruits were from the ranks of the various "Freikorps" groups of the day, composed mainly of disgruntled ex-soldiers, and they were first utilized at a NSDAP party meeting in Munich in November of 1921.
