Original German Pre-WWII Double Sided Decorative Naval Tapestry with Anchor & Shield Emblems - 14" x 21"

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice German Pre-WWII Decorative Naval tapestry, later updated with an NSDAP emblem during the "Third Reich Period". The tapestry is double sided, with the two sides originally sewn separately, and then sewn together around a cheesecloth insert to give it more weight for better hanging. It measures 14 inches wide and 21 inches long, and is intended to be hung vertically.

One side has a red background, with a white border inside, and a central white shield with a red stripe across it. We unfortunately have not been able to identify which city or state this emblem is from. Towards the top there is a stitched on multipiece swas (hook cross) emblem, which looks to have been cut out of an armband and attached, as some of the red background can be seen protruding out from the edges. The stitching also goes through both sides, so it definitely looks to have been added later during the NSDAP period.

The other side has a white background, with a pink rayon border inside, and a central red anchor.

The tapestry definitely looks to have been hung with tacks on the top, as we can see holes, wear, and rust stains up there. Most likely it was torn off when brought back by a USGI, damaging it. Overall the condition is very good, with wear commensurate with age, and a lovely look. Very attractive and definitely worth further research.
