Original Item: One Only. This is a fine example of the later model Comblain Pioneer Saw back Bayonet, which has a much thinner and longer blade than the earlier M1867 model. It is 23 1/2 inches in overall length, with a 18 1/2 inch long saw back blade. This blade is only about 1 1/8 inches wide, making it much less substantial than the previous version.
Up until WWI, this style of bayonet was common for "Pioneer" troops, light engineering soldiers that prepared for later troops. Contrary to rumors, the back of the bayonet really was for sawing wood, not a device to inflict grievous wounds on enemies. However, rumors proved stronger than truth, and by WWI the saw back bayonet was on the way out.
Our example is dated 1887 and should fit Model 1870 and 1882 brass and steel framed Belgian Comblain rifles. It has a nice hooked quillon crossguard, which bears serial number V / 4234. There are also additional proof marks on the blade, the same as seen on other Belgian Comblain bayonets we have seen. The bayonet comes with its original steel mounted leather scabbard, which is in good condition, though the leather has deteriorated significantly.
The blade ricasso is marked with A (Scale Logo) C, indicating manufacture by Alexander Coppel & Co. located in the legendary "City of Blades", Solingen. This company manufactured bayonets for many years and up through WWII under the name Alcoso. Sadly, as the Coppel family was Jewish, they saw their company stolen from them and "Aryanized" during WWII by the NSDAP.
