Original item: Only One Available. Just received out of a large sword collection, this is a very interesting example of the rare Austrian Model 1858 Heavy Cavalry Saber. This model is one of many incremental improvements made to the design based on input from Cuirassiers and Uhlans. It replaced the earlier model 1850, and then was itself replaced in 1861, so they were only made for 3 years.
The design is relatively standard, with a heavy curved blade and substantial guard, which has the correct 7 holes. The blade ricasso is marked on both sides with the Austrian Imperial Eagle, and one side is marked by maker C. JURMANN, which is also marked on the back of the scabbard above the upper hanger ring.
Condition of the saber is good, though it definitely has been modified somewhat from the original issued configuration. The grip looks to have been destroyed at some point, and was then replaced with what looks to be a somewhat crude cord wrapped piece of wood, which was then painted and glued into place. Additionally, these were issued with the hilt and scabbard in bright steel, but both have now been painted over long ago, probably for display or possibly theatrical use. The original blade is still nice, showing light use and some past oxidation and staining.
A nice example of a 19th Century Austrian Heavy Cavalry Saber, ready to restore or display as is.
