Original Item: One of a Kind. This is wonderful marked wood-lined Sterling Silver Commemorative Presentation box, measuring 8" X 3 1/2" X 2 1/2" with a hinged lid. It is marked STERLING near the maker mark on the bottom of the box. The top is engraved:-

The front face of the box is engraved with the names of the ships 24 officers, who presented the box. Inside the box is an old clipping, with contact information for what is most likely the person in charge of the ship's Veterans group.
The U.S.S. GRIDLEY was laid down June 3rd 1935 at the Fore River Shipyard portion of the Boston Navy Yard. She was launched December 1st 1936 as a DESTROYER (DD380), the lead ship of the Gridley Class. The second destroyer to bear this name, she was named for the U.S. Naval Officer Charles Vernon Gridley, born in 1844. He had graduated from the U.S. Naval Collage in 1863 and served at the Battle of MOBILE BAY in 1864. He had a glorious Naval career and died in 1898 in Japan, still serving.
The U.S.S. Gidley was in Pearl Harbor until November 29th 1941, when she left for Wake Island, missing the terrible Air Attack of December 7th just over a week later. She served all through WW2 mostly in the Pacific theater. At the end of of the war, the four Gridley-class destroyers were unfortunately deemed unsuitable for adequate anti-aircraft upgrades, and were decommissioned in 1946. The U.S.S. Gridley was sold off on August 20 1947, and scrapped. In 1961, the Next U.S.S. Gridley was launched, continuing the name.
