Original WWII Japanese Occupation Katana Samurai Sword in Souvenir Resting Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Purchased directly from a veteran's family, this is a nice condition post-war katana in a wooden resting scabbard. What makes this interesting is that the owner marked various areas of Japan that they visited during the occupation. Offered in very good condition with some areas of discoloration, it is still razor sharp and nick free. Blade length is approximately 25 and overall length 34. The blade is machine made, with machining marks still visible on multiple parts of the blade. There is a cosmetic hamon, or wave, but it is not a true temper line. The blade does have some minor corrosion on the edge and blade body. The tang is unsigned and angular, typical of machine-made katanas.

This sword is mounted in a "resting scabbard" or Shirasaya, which is intended for storing the blade when it is not in use. The hilt is in good worn condition with a small split, while the scabbard itself does not have any major splits, just some denting and wear, and a small crack at the top. The scabbard overall shows quite a bit of age, and is wrapped at the top with leather. Moving the leather shows the original light color of the scabbard.

Listed on the scabbard are various areas which the owner had visited, which include:MINOSHIMA, WAKAYAMA, KYOTO, and OSAKA. There is also some Japanese writing on the scabbard, most of which is in Katakana, the script use for foreign words. "SU MI SU" could mean the surname "Smith", which is quite common. The rest of the characters are unfortunately not intelligible due to wear.

It has been over one thousand years ago that the art of making swords appeared in Japan. The swordsmiths of the time may not have known it but they were creating a legendary sword. The Samurai sword has seen combat in many battlefields. From the early days of the Samurai warrior to the fierce battles in the South Pacific during WWII.

The Samurai sword has grown to be one of the most highly desired military antiques.
