Original Japanese Order of the Sacred Treasure 3rd Class Medal with Neck Ribbon

Item Description

Original Items: One of a Kind. The Order of the Sacred Treasure (瑞宝章, Zuihō-shō) is a Japanese order, established on 4 January 1888 by Emperor Meiji as the Order of Meiji. From 1888 to 2003 it was awarded in 8 classes, with a gold-striped very pale blue ribbon. After this, the bottom two classes were discontinued, and the ribbon changed to gold-striped sky blue. The most widely conferred Japanese order, it is awarded to those who have made distinguished achievements in research fields, business industries, healthcare, social work, state/local government fields.

Originally a male-only decoration, the order has been made available to women since 1919; it is awarded for both civil and military merit, though of a lesser degree than that required for the conferment of the Order of the Rising Sun.

This example is of the 3rd class, which is the lowest of the neck orders. It is in very good condition, though there is some repair to the enamel. The color in the ribbon has faded a bit, so it looks more white than pale blue, and the gilding on the medal has worn in areas, exposing the underlying silver flash coating. The back of the medal has markings in Japanese, which we are unfortunately not able to translate.
