Original Extremely Rare WWII German K98 Seitengewehr 42 Bayonet- Complete with Multitool

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. An original and extremely Rare Seitengewehr 42 Bayonet for the K98 Rifle. The SG42 Bayonet was designed to replace the standard German bayonet of World War Two. It was produced in very limited numbers. The SG42 Bayonet doubled as a fighting knife, and with the addition of a multi tool that fit neatly inside the grip, it was also a versatile tool that could be implemented on the frontlines. The bayonet made extensive use of sheet metal stampings, with almost every part being stamped with the exception of the blade.

The blade of the bayonet is 6 ¼” long, and is made of steel. The blade shows scattered light marks along the length and signs of extensive sharpening and grinding. Luckily, blade markings were spared from the extensive sharpening. The knife is marked on its ricasso with maker code cof and the Waffenampt mark of WaA519, for the legendary firm of Carl Eickhorn of Solingen, the famous "City of Blades" in Western Germany.

According to J. Anthony Carter's book, GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS, this company was founded in 1865 by Carl Eickhorn, and is arguably the most famous of all Solingen makers. Not only could the family trace their history back 500 years, but they could also demonstrate involvement in the hardening and grinding industries for the same period. Truly the nobility of Solingen Edged weapon dynasties. Eickhorn edged weapons are the most desirable of all makers.

The grip of the blade is made of riveted bakelite plates, which are in very good condition showing surface cracks and wear from honest age and wear. One corner portion of the right side grip plate is broken off at the guard area of the knife. Both grip panels are slightly loose. The bayonet lug attachment mechanism is in perfect working order.

The tool kit is in very good condition. The multi-tool retains approximately 85% of its original bluing. Each of the three tools, knife/can opener, screwdriver/wire stripper, and marlin spike/ awl are in unaltered condition and function perfectly. The knife/can opener is marked with letter code ltk for Robert Klaas, Feine Solinger Stahlwaren (Fine Solingen Steelware), another famous Solingen maker . The tool kit snaps into the handle of the blade appropriately. The tool shows signs of use and honest wear. With some spots of light surface rust and corrosion here and there.

The scabbard of the SG42 Bayonet is made of bakelite and a steel belt clip. The bakelite sheath is in near mint condition, with no cracks or chips present. The steel belt clip is pressed into the throat of the scabbard.

This incredibly futuristic bayonet was well ahead of its time when it was in use, looking very modern even by today’s standards! Not to be confused with a Post War Sudanese AR-10 Contract bayonet or a reproduction. This is an absolutely genuine example of one of the rarest edged weapons of the German military of WWII!
