Original U.S. WWII Era Fighting Knife Lot - 4 Knives, 2 With Scabbards

Item Description

Original Items: Only One Lot of 4 Available. This is a lovely assortment of well used fighting knives from the WWII era. The knives consist of theater made ones as well as private purchase examples, two common sights seen during WWII.

Theater knives are knives made by military personnel in the various theaters of war. Each knife is unique in its own way due to the maker's style, preferences and materials available. Most theater knives were made from spare parts, wreckage, tools and already existing blades.

The knives in this lot
- RH PAL 36 MkII Style Fighting Knife with Leather Belt Scabbard: PAL was originally a manufacturer of pocketknives, but after the Remington acquisition they expanded their range of products to include a variety of fixed blade knives as well. PAL received a number of US government knife contracts during World War II and produced thousands of combat knives during the war years. Pal went out of business in 1953.The USN Mark 1 combat knife was produced by a variety of manufactures during World War II and was issued to Navy personnel by the thousands. It had a 5 ¼” long blade and was patterned after typical hunting and side knives of the era. The subsequent Mark 2 knife had a longer 7” blade.

This particular example was manufactured by the PAL Cutlery Company, with an overall length of 11 inches, and is in very good, used condition. The knife comes complete with the matching leather scabbard, and has a substantial 6 1/4 inch long wide clip-point blade, patterned after the USN MkII. The ricasso is marked on one side of the blade: RH – PAL / MADE IN USA – 36. These were generally private purchase knives, and were available to anyone, as well as the public. They were similar to the "Q" series "Quartermaster Knives" manufactured by Case and Cattaraugus. The blade is in very good condition, though it does some overall surface oxidation due to service and being in the scabbard. It is however still quite sharp, and does not look to have been sharpened much during service.

- WWII Cattaraugus 225Q Commando Fighting Knife With Replacement Scabbard (China): Manufactured by Cattaraugus. The model 225q was designed for use by the US special forces. With a very stout blade measuring approximately 6 inches, handle comprised of stacked leather washers with a checkered steel pommel. This example is in poor condition and comes complete with a dried and cracked leather scabbard which is stamped as being made in China.

- Dix Style FIghting Knife: There are no markings on this knife but it has almost identical appearance to the Dix commando style knives. The knife has a slimmer M3 style blade, stacked leather grip and alloy pommel.

- Plexiglass Handle Knife: The handle is cloudy and does have some chipping present. The blade appears to have been made from a bayonet blade. We can make out what looks like a stylized Z on the ricasso but due to the oxidation and surface rust it is hard to read.

All knives are great examples of WWII era fighting knives and all show signs of heavy use and wear.
