Original Imperial Japanese Army WWII Last Ditch Converted Civil Defense Helmet with Cover

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Toward the end of WWII Imperial Japan was starved of raw materials and factories. The need to more equipment was dire and the IJA used what was available. This is an extremely rare Type 90 Civil defense helmet which was issued for use in the Imperial Japanese Army.

The Japanese WWII Civil Defense helmet was the final of four variations of the Type 90 Army helmet and was designed specifically for mainland civil defense.

Overall condition is very good with correct brown paint on the interior, while the exterior has been given a winter white wash, which is quite rare for this style of helmet. Inside is a late war simplified leather liner, with panels that might be pressed paper. The liner is complete and mounted securely, though we do not recommend wearing it, as the liner is delicate. Also included is the complete original canvas chinstrap.

The helmet has a rare canvas cover over the shell, which shows wear from age and service. It is in somewhat delicate condition, with some sections missing, and overall the fabric is deteriorated.

This is one of the most interesting of this style helmet we have ever encountered, with the white paint and canvas cover. It is possible that it was painted for winter service, but then the cover added as paint was not available. A rare and little known variation of the military issue type 90 Tetsubo helmet making this example a necessity for any Japanese WW2 headgear collection.
