Original WWII German 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger with Ivoroid Grip by Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Cie

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is an excellent example of a mid-war production 2nd Model Luftwaffe dagger. It is a fine Solingen-Produced example made by the legendary Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Cie. The celluloid grip of this dagger is a lovely ivory white color, with simulated ivory "grain", which is usually referred to as "Ivoroid." This is a custom order grip, and the first we have seen. It has a nice tapered shape, and is tightly wrapped with twisted silver bullion wire.

The hilt mounts are similarly great on this dagger. The pommel is crisp and excellent. The swass on both sides are clear, and the oak leaves around it is raised out and heavily hand enhanced. The pommel appears to be solid aluminum, and not plated, so it would not have the blackening seen on plated examples. It does however have some background darkening.

The crossguard is also made of Aluminum, which was an "Air Age" material, which was used to make most airplanes. It was considered fitting and desirable for the eagle-shaped guard to be made of this material. The front side is an eagle with a breast and talon area that is vaulted out much more so than the crossguards seen on other types of daggers. This guard shows very little wear and has nice feathering on the eagle. The bird, of course, flies to the left and grasps a mobile swas in his talons. The reverse panel is decorated with small pebbling, which is still clear. The ferrule is present, and has a lovely dark patina, with fully intact zinc plating.

This scabbard is a fine, straight example, with lots of the original zinc-plated finish present. There is some wear through the plating around the edges, but overall it has the lovely dark patina of aged zinc. The solid zinc bands are crisp, with the same dark patina, and have hand enhanced oak leaves tipped at a 45 degree angle. The throat is retained by a single screw on the hanger ring side of the scabbard.

The blade on this example is not nickel plated, which is common for later produced blades. The blade is in excellent original condition, with lots of the original factory crossgrain present. There is some runner wear and very light staining in areas on the blade, as shown in the pictures.

The reverse ricasso is etched with the "Knight's Head" trademark of the WKC firm, and a large size leather blade washer is in place in the guard. The logo reads

SOLINGEN

Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Co is a famous manufacturer of military swords and cutlery in Solingen, Germany - a city famous since the middle ages for its metal-working and craftsmanship in sword making. The traditional manufacturing of swords at WKC dates back to the year 1774 when the Weyersberg first registered the ''Kings head'' as their trademark. Later in 1883 the company merged with the Kirschbaums and the company WKC was formed as it exists today.

This really is a great 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger, with a rare Ivoroid grip, offered in excellent condition, ready to display!
