Original Rare German M-1898/02 Pioneer Sawback Bayonet with Scabbard with Saxony Markings

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. These bayonets are literally like finding Hen's Teeth today!  The very hardest of all "Butcher Saw Back" bayonets to find is this M-1898/02 which comes complete with scabbard. This model is substantially larger than the M-1898/05 model that replaced it. This is an attic find and completely fresh to the market.

This example is marked on the blade ricasso with maker V.C. SCHILLING of SUHL, Germany, a well-known maker of the time. The Spine, unlike most of the bayonets we see, is marked CROWN / FA / 05, indicating it was issued in Saxony in 1905. The "FA" Monogram stands for Frederick Augustus III (Friedrich August III), who reigned from 1904 until 1918, when he abdicated during the German Revolution following WWI.

The bayonet has a very bright shining 16 3/4" saw Back blade, which is 1 1/4" wide at the bottom. The the cross guard has the partial muzzle ring "horns", which were carried over onto early 98/05 bayonets. Imperial proof marks to pommel, wood grips all in fine patinated condition.

Offer "AS IS" uncleaned, just as received from more that 100 years in storage. Very rare, especially with its original leather scabbard.
