Original Imperial German WWI Artillery Officer Sword Dated 1897 by Otto Mertens of Solingen with Unit Marking

Item Description

Original item. One Only. Despite the machine guns and artillery, swords were still issued to officers in WW1. This is a fine example of the German Artillery Officer's Sword commonly referred to as the "Blücher Sabel" named for the Prussian Commander who was ally to the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

This example is in fine condition showing really nice condition and stamped on the spine of the ricasso is a small Crown over W over 97 for Kaiser Wilhelm 1897. There are additional markings on the edge side of the ricasso. The maker of the sword is OTTO MERTENS / SOLINGEN and is stamped under the rain guard (chappe) on the ricasso. Under the opposite rain guard is the arsenal marking of Crown over ERFURT.

Additionally, this sword is marked on the cross guard with unit marking A.M. XI. 6.41, in the standard German regimental form. This would probably indicate the XI Army Corps, or a related unit.

Various serial numbers and proof marks on hilt and blade, this sword comes with the original all steel scabbard, also in good condition. This sword was in service for decades, and does definitely show age, as well as sharpening to the blade, which has some nicks in it, as well as some removed surface rust. However, if you want a sword that definitely looks to have "been there", this is it.

A fine German WW1 Artillery Officer's "Bleucher Sabel" with scabbard,
