Original German WWII Police Officer's Degen Dress Sword with Scabbard by Paul Weyersberg

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a genuine vintage World War II German Police Officer's Degen (Épée) Dress Sword, made by by Paul Weyersberg of Solingen.  It is still in very good used condition, looking to have been worn many times, but not abused. The nickel plating throughout the fittings and the "D" guard is still bright and in great condition. There are some areas of oxidation, but none of the base metal can be seen.

The pommel cap has excellent serrations and no sign of improper removal. The "D" guard is in wonderful condition, ending in the the usual teardrop quillon. The ferrule is crisp, decorated with six standing oak leaves separated by acorns.

The ebony grip is in excellent condition, tightly wrapped with nickel wire and with a fine cover plate on the reverse. One of the wires has been cut through, right inside a dent in the grip. There is also a small chunk missing next to the insignia. The inset Police Civic eagle insignia is also in fine condition, and looks to be aluminum, so there is no plating to erode. Much of the blackened background remains.

The scabbard is in very good condition, with just a few small bends, and no dents we can see. It has original paint which shows some age or wear. This paint is 75% intact. The lower scabbard mount has a decorative pattern of lines, and retains almost all the nickel plate. The dome headed retaining screws are unfortunately missing, as they would often shear off if the scabbard was dropped on the drag. The upper mount is in the "Wotan's Knot" configuration, which is also nickel plated. It is in very good condition, but like the bottom fitting, the retaining screws are missing.

The 33 inch blade is in solid gem, with the standard matte finish. It shows some age and has a nice double fuller, with very little staining or wear. It has however been sharpened. This great example was made by Paul Weyersberg of Solingen, the legendary "City of Blades" in western Germany. The reverse ricasso is marked PAUL WEYERSBERG & Co. / SOLINGEN in double ovals around the firms trademark "Sword-and-Wreath" logo, which was the only marking they used during the NSDAP era. The original leather blade washer is unfortunately missing.

These police swords are quite rare and desirable, especially ones this nice. Ready to add to your collection and display!
