Original German 18th Century Hirschfänger Long Hunting Dagger with Horn Grip & Decorated Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is an item that simply reeks of romance! In use for centuries, the German Hirschfänger (Deer Catcher) long hunting daggers have always made lovely display pieces, as well as military sidearms. They were designed to quickly end the struggling of wounded game. Many of the early bayonets used by the various German States were based on the Hirschfänger design, which is both simple and elegant, almost a short sword or dirk in practical terms.

This is a great 18th Century German Hirschfänger, with a lovely decorated scabbard. Definitely an upmarket example for someone of prominence. It features a curved blade of 16", with a very elegant polished horn grip, and measures 20" in overall length. The shell cross guard is made from intricately worked brass, with lovely designs.

The wood scabbard is brass mounted at the top and bottom, and the body is covered in some sort of resin lacquer that gives the appearance of tortoiseshell or similar. A very elegant Hirschfänger hunting dagger dating very possibly to 1770 to 1800. In great shape and ready to display!
