Original Brazilian Model 1880 Cavalry Saber with Scabbard by Alexander Coppel of Solingen Germany

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This very nice Brazilian M1880 Cavalry Saber was most likely released in 1976 from military stores in Rio De Janeiro, along with a lot of other now obsolete edged weapons. It is in very good condition, with only storage wear, and almost no sign of actual use in the field.

The blade surface is clean and bright, without pitting and is unsharpened, displaying only a tiny bit of staining along its 31 1/2 inch length, and has the correct M proof mark on the spine. The cupped steel guard is marked with the letters E.U.B. for Estados Unidos Brasil (United States of Brazil), and early name for the country. The hilt has pressed black leather grips secured with five steel rivets, with a crack in one side near the lower double rivets, which is commonly seen on these. Overall length of the sword is 37 1/2 inches.

The blade ricasso is maker marked ALEX. COPPEL / SOLINGEN, indicating manufacture by Alexander Coppel & Co. located in the legendary "City of Blades", Solingen. This company made large amounts of export bayonets during the 19th century, and also manufactured bayonets for many years and up through WWII under the name Alcoso. Sadly, as the Coppel family was Jewish, they saw their company stolen from them and "Aryanized" during WWII by the NSDAP.

The included steel scabbard is in great shape, and just has a few rust spots and tiny dents. It also has the M proof mark on the drag.

It's very hard to find any South American swords especially one with sharp clear Brazil markings and in such find condition. Ready to display!
