Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Originally this was of course one half of a pair but only this one survives. Henry William Mortimer had a shop at 89 Fleet Street, London from 1780 until 1835 when the business name was changed to H.W. Mortimer and Sons from 1835 to 1855.
H.W. Mortimer bore a Royal Warrant having supplied weapons to the Royal family and was well known for supplying weapons to The Royal Mail Coaches. Probably the best known and one of the most revered gun makers of the period. Sets of Dueling Pistol by this maker command extremely high prices by collectors today.
This dueling pistol has a 12 inch lightly browned steel octagonal barrel with inlaid gold lines to the breach. The top barrel flat is engraved H.W. MORTIMER. LONDON. GUNMAKER TO HIS MAJESTY.. The barrel even has a gold lined touchhole, which helped prevent powder burn. We have removed the barrel from the stock by removing the two wedges, and the bottom of the barrel has a CROWN / GP "Gunmaker's Proof' and CROWN / V "Viewed" mark from the London Proofhouse.
The lock is clearly marked H.W. MORTIMER under the pan, and is a very upmarket version, with a bridled frizzen which also features a roller on the bottom. There is a safety to the rear of the hammer, however it does not move at present. The lock functions correctly, holding at half cock, and firing at full. It is also fitted with a "set trigger", which is actuated by pushing the trigger forward. This can be done in any lock position, but usually you would not want to "set" the trigger until it is fully cocked.
The walnut buttstock is very finely checkered around the grip, the steel mounts are blued and the trigger guard bears fine engraving with a pineapple finial. Overall length is 18 inches., and it still retains its original ramrod under the barrel.
Just one half of the original pair and therefore priced reasonably for such a fine gun from one of the most renowned gun makers in English history. Ready to display!
