Original U.S. Revolutionary War Era British Long Land Pattern Brown Bess Flintlock Musket by Vernon - dated 1761

Item Description

Original Item: One of a Kind. Just fresh to the Market this came to us only two weeks ago and we suspect was "straight out of the attic". It was totally filthy from many years storage, and we have gently cleaned away accumulated dirt to reveal what looks to be a very nice original musket that appears to be totally correct in every regard. There are no missing parts that we can see, and it has a lovely patina of age, brought out by the cleaning.

This is a very nice "Long Land Pattern" Brown Bess Flintlock Musket, made by VERNON and dated 1761. As far as we can tell, this is the "1756" type of the Long Land Pattern. The butt plate has an extremely long "tang" and the musket bears the correct style wrist plate, often used for Company and Trooper markings but there is no trace of any markings having been installed. For more information please see The Brown Bess: An Identification Guide and Illustrated Study of Britain's Most Famous Musket by Erik Goldstein and Stuart C. Mowbray.

We were unfortunately unable to locate information on Vernon, however we have seen several other examples of Muskets in the same type period from this maker, one from 1758, two others from 1761, and one dated 1762. The musket has the correct "banana" shaped lock plate, which is fully marked with a very faint Crown over G.R. mid lock for King George III, with VERNON / 1761 across the tail. It has the correct bridled frizzen of the period, and the action is strong, holding at half cock and firing at full. The musket has a full 46" regulation length, .75" smoothbore iron barrel, however due to wear the proof marks are just "ghosts" that we cannot clearly make out.

This example has a very nice walnut stock, which still retains the "bannister rail" butt stock and the large bulge by the lower ramrod pipe of the Long Land Pattern. Still installed is the correct iron ramrod. It has four ramrod pipes with the correct "Long" front pipe, introduced with the 1756 Long Land Pattern Brown Bess Musket. It features the standard all brass mounts including a long "Rounded" Side Plate with a tail.

A great example of a U.S. Revolutionary and Seven Years War era Long Land Pattern Brown Bess that escaped later modifications. If only it bore some Regimental markings so we could discover its provenance. A very fine musket, today so hard to find, ready to display!
