Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This headgear is an original Federal Model 1875 chasseur-style kepi in very good condition. Also called the “McClellan Cap”, this type cap, or kepi, was popular for both officers and enlisted men.
This Federal Cavalry Chasseur Pattern Kepi features fabric of very fine blue wool broadcloth. The crown stands nearly 2 1/4" high at the front, 4 1/2" at the rear seam and the top is 4 1/2" in diameter, stiffened with a pasteboard beneath the lining. The body of the cap meets a band of wool seamed only at the rear and stiffened with leather. The cap's interior is lined with dark brown glazed cotton which is still well attached to the top seam. The leather sweatband is 1 1/8" wide. The flat visor is original to the hat, and composed of black patent leather. There are two brass Federal Cavalry "C" buttons. The interior pasteboard is embossed with a makers name and logo that we cannot make out fully. Furthermore, there is a 47 carved into the inner pasteboard, this could represent a veteran of the 47th New York Volunteer Infantry who then later served in the Indian Wars.
