Original Napololeonic Wars Regimentally Marked Gunner's Powder Horn for Cannon Priming

Item Description

Original Item: One of a Kind. This really nice original example is in very fine condition, showing masses of patina! This is a Gunner's Powder Horn, used to prime the Cannons using very fine gunpowder. Marked on large end fitting of the horn are what we assume are Regimental Markings:  O-A. No.5. I.

This horn is just classic of its type, the body is basically a 14" Cow's Horn fitted with a brass end plug fitting on the wide end, in the center of which is a cork screw plug which is removed for reloading the powder. At the thin end there is a 4" brass spout with sprung loaded catch to keep the powder secure. On the two brass mounts there are two brass hanging rings for a leather shoulder cord.

Used by both sides during the Napoleonic Wars, without further marking we can only go on the Regimental Markings to indicate the horn origin which rather suggest it is German or possibly French. Most attractive and ready to display!
