Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a wonderful condition Imperial German late 19th Century Miniature Model 1889 Infantry Officer sword and scabbard, with a very nice etched and gilded blade. The sword measures 11 1/8 inches with a blade of 8 3/4 inches long. Aside from just a bit of the tip of the blade missing, it is in great shape. It looks to have been given out in 1899 during a celebration of "Kaiser Day" in Solingen, which is in the heart of the Bergischen Lande (Mountain Land) area of Western Germany.
One side of the blade shows the Imperial German Eagle, with lots of Oak Leaf motifs, and a crown over a cross. There is also the unmistakable image of a woman with a winged helm, sword, and shield: a Walküre (Valkyrie), the legendary women who bring fallen warriors to Valhalla in Nordic Mythology.
There is also an etched panel that reads:
SEINER MAJESTÄT DEM DEUTSCHEN KAISER UND KÖNIG VON PREUSSEN WILHELM II
In English, this translates as "His Majesty The German Emperor And King Of Prussia Wilhelm II".
The other side reads:
IN DANKBARER ERINNERUNG AN DEN UNVERGESSLICHEN KAISERTAG IM BERGISCHEN LANDE AM 12.AUGUST 1899 DIE ALTE WAFFENSTADT SOLINGEN
Translated, this reads "In Grateful Memory Of The Unforgettable Emperor's Day In Bergischen Lande On August 12, 1899. The Old Armed City Of Solingen." Additional etched phrases are HURRAH DEM KAISER (Hurrah the Emperor) and the makers name WEYERSBERG KIRSCHBAUM & CO SOLINGEN. WKC is one of the more famous makers in the legendary "City of Blades", Solingen. They were chosen for their pre-eminence even within the center of German edged weapon manufacture to make the swords celebrating the Kaiser's day that Celebrated the city.
This lovely little commemorative sword is in great shape, with a small sword knot attached to the hilt. Lots of artistry went into this simple miniature sword. Ready to display!
