Original British Napoleonic Officer's Brass Mounted Flintlock Pistol by Phillips of London with Brass Barrel - Circa 1813

Regular price $2,295.00

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a very nice officer's private purchase rifled flintlock pistol, all brass mounted with a lovely octagonal brass barrel. It is marked PHILLIPS on the lock plate, and LONDON on the top of the barrel, a known maker of private purchase pistols during the Napoleonic era. We have seen a nearly identical pistol from this maker, except the barrel is round, and not octagonal. It also shares the early design "unbridled" lock, without an external support bridle for the frizzen and pan. The design is reminiscent of of the Naval officer's pistols of the time due to the brass barrel, but these also could be carried on land.

This lovely pistol is full stocked and has all brass mountings, with a gorgeous stock and brass escutcheon on the back of the grip. It features an octagonal BRASS barrel of10" with an overall length of 15 1/2". The barrel has the CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS / BPC "proof" and CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS / V "viewed" marks from the English city of Birmingham on the top near the breech. These are the correct markings for 1813 and later manufacture. It comes complete with a wooden ramrod, which is probably a period replacement for display.

The stock is in fantastic condition, with great grain and a lovely look, possibly having seen some reconditioning in the past. The lock is in good shape and functional, though it does not hold at half cock at all. We checked the bore, and there is some fouling from use, so this pistol did see some real use during its life, possibly during the Napoleonic Wars.

A lovely example of an officer's private purchase flintlock pistol, ready to research and display!
