LaVerne George Saunders was a remarkable Brigadier General who served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. After graduating from West Point in 1928, he started working as an assistant coach for the college football team there, where he honed his leadership skills and passion for teamwork. His military career began in earnest when he was tasked with commanding the 11th Bombardment Group during the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the Guadalcanal campaign. Despite facing incredible odds, Saunders showed his courage and ingenuity by leading his troops through some of the toughest battles of the war.

Unfortunately, in November 1942, Saunders' plane was shot down during a mission and he had to ditch it in the sea. However, this didn't deter him from continuing his service. In 1944, he was appointed commander of the 58th Bombardment Wing, where he distinguished himself as a strategic thinker and a decisive leader. He led the bombing mission against Yawata, which was the first attack on Japan since the Doolittle Raid in 1942. Saunders demonstrated his unwavering commitment to his duties and his troops, even though he knew the risks involved.

Despite his bravery, Saunders also experienced some setbacks during his military career. In September 1944, he was involved in a plane crash that left him hospitalized for two and a half years. Nevertheless, he remained steadfast and continued to inspire his comrades with his unwavering determination and resilience. He retired in February 1947, leaving behind a legacy of courage, leadership, and service that continues to inspire generations of soldiers.
