Original U.S. WWII Knife Crafters Broad Spear Point Fighting Knife Constructed From Imported British Pattern 1856 Band Sword by Robert Mole with Leather Sheath

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fascinating piece of history, a World War II fighting knife crafted by Knife Crafters of Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia. What makes these knives even more unique is that they were produced from old sword blades, with three knives typically being manufactured from a single sword blade. The handles are made of hollow steel, which makes them lightweight and easy to handle, and covered in leather to provide a comfortable grip. The scabbards are of the same basic pattern, with a unique, three-piece construction that makes them durable and long-lasting. A single leather grip-retaining strap with a metal snap is also riveted to the front of the scabbard above the throat, adding an extra layer of protection for the knife. This knife is truly a testament to the craftsmanship and ingenuity of the people who made it, and a symbol of the sacrifices made during one of the most significant events in human history.

It is quite common to come across examples that lack any information about their maker, leaving one clueless about their origin. However, this particular example stands out from the rest as it retains all of its original ricasso markings, providing valuable insight into its history and provenance.

The markings are as follows:

ROB’T MOLE
& SONS
MANUFACTURER
BIRMINGHAM

If you examine the reverse ricasso of the knife, you will notice an ЯR marking. This marking holds an important significance as it indicates that the item was deemed "unfit for service" due to its failure in the required strength and durability tests. It is highly likely that the item was unable to meet the quality standards that were set for it, which is why it was more than likely sold off as surplus.

The leather-covered hollow handle is in remarkable condition, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship that has gone into its making. The leather has a smooth finish that has retained its original texture, with only a few slight handling marks adding to its character. The scabbard is equally impressive, displaying only minor surface crazing that adds to its distinguished appearance. The item has been well-maintained and is a testament to its quality and durability.

This exquisite fighting knife from the World War II era is a true masterpiece that is sure to captivate collectors and history enthusiasts alike. With its sleek and attractive design, it is considered to be one of the most desirable and sought-after knives from that period. No collection of World War II militaria is complete without at least a small selection of fighting knives, and this Knife Crafters fighting knife is a perfect example of why. Its value has stood the test of time, with prices ranging from $700 to $800 a decade ago, and still fetching similar prices today, especially at auctions. The Knife Crafters fighting knife mentioned here is being offered at a near decade-old price, making it an excellent investment for any collector or enthusiast who wants to add a unique and valuable piece to their collection.
