Original U.S. Mexican-American War Era Etched Artillery Officer's Saber with Scabbard

Regular price $795.00

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a truly stunning example of an early American Artillery Officer's Sword, and it's clear that it has seen a lot of use over the years. Despite this, it's in remarkably good condition, and it comes complete with its original and correct scabbard.

While it's difficult to make out all of the manufacturer's information due to fading, some details can still be discerned. Unfortunately, much of the information is obscured by the rain chape on each side, making it difficult to determine the sword's origins with certainty.

Despite some past pitting and staining, the sword's overall condition is quite nice. There is an unfortunate twist towards the end of the blade, but this doesn't detract from the sword's beauty or functionality. The etching is still mostly distinguishable, and it features a gold-washed filler that adds to the sword's elegance and sophistication.

Overall, this is a truly remarkable piece that would make a wonderful addition to any collection of antique weapons or military memorabilia.

This example does appear to be Mexican-American War era (1846-1848) used and is in great, field worn condition. The sword is all steel mounted with a standard "P" handguard and a very nice rounded pommel. The sword does show wear with the fittings being loose and the leather grip is loose as well with material loss.

Overall it is 37 inches long, with a 32.5 inch long engraved single edge curved blade. Each side has a fuller towards the spine, with some light engraving on the first 1/3 of the blade. The old inlay is still visible in places, with a large section where the original "fire blue" finish is still present. There is also some light staining and surface pitting on the last half of the blade, as well as near the cross guard, but nothing major.

The included scabbard appears to be original to the sword and is in fair condition. The all steel scabbard does not appear to have been painted. Unfortunately there is some rather extensive denting and an unfortunate crack towards the middle.

All in all this is a fantastic sword that appears to have seen many years of faithful use. Comes more than ready for further research and display.
