Original WWII Pacific Hand Painted B-4 Bag of GHQ Driver to General MacArthur

Item Description

Original Item: One-of-a-kind. Harold Gibson of Kingsport Tennessee was one of the drivers for Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers (SCAP) General Douglas MacArthur.

Soldiers stationed at GHQ and other places commonly gathered souvenirs to take home after the war. Having a custom paint job on a B-4 bag was not uncommon but what sets this bag apart from any other we have ever seen is the stunning artistry. Harold Gibson found a master Japanese painter and had him paint a pin up girl, perhaps a girl friend, or movie actress on the side of this bag along with his name, address, GHQ flag and regimental patch. On the reverse side is Mount Fuji, a pagoda, traditional Japanese structures and Tokyo Japan.

The bag is empty, except for pillows we have used to help keep its shape and display it properly. The zippers work well and it is in overall excellent condition.

This is a one-of-a-kind WWII work of art, the quality of which is exceptional, simply put this is one of the most memorable and exceptional Pacific theatre collectibles we’ve ever encountered.

The Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers (SCAP) (originally briefly styled Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers) was the title held by General Douglas MacArthur during the Allied occupation of Japan following World War II.

In Japan, the position was generally referred to as GHQ (General Headquarters), as SCAP also referred to the offices of the occupation, including a staff of several hundred U.S. civil servants as well as military personnel. Some of these personnel effectively wrote a first draft of the Japanese Constitution, which the Diet then ratified after a few amendments. Australian, British, Indian, and New Zealand forces under SCAP were organized into a sub-command known as British Commonwealth Occupation Force.

These actions led MacArthur to be viewed as the new Imperial force in Japan by many Japanese political and civilian figures, even being considered to be the rebirth of the Shogun style government which Japan was ruled under until the start of the Meiji Restoration.
