Original Victorian P-1871 Light Cavalry Helmet of the 4th Royal Irish Dragoons

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Victorian Britain was the age of Empire. The industrial revolution provided the technology and equipment while the military provided the victories. Britain expanded to dominate the world and pomp and glory became the order of the day.

Here is a magnificent brass light cavalry helmet with impressive black and white horse hair plume of the 4th Royal Irish Dragoons, the most senior of the Irish Cavalry Regiments. First raised as the Earl of Arran's Regiment of Cuirassiers in 1685 it became the 4th Royal Irish Dragoons Guards in 1788. Still in existence today as the 4th/7th Dragoon Guards after amalgamation with the 7th Dragoon Guards in 1922.

This helmet is the Pattern of 1871 and was in use for the remainder of Queen Victoria's reign. Complete with the original leather lining the only drawback is that leather backing to the brass ringed chin scales is sadly lacking or remains in virtual tatters, the stitching having gone and some of the leather now deteriorated. Could be carefully restored by an able seamstress, should you happen to have one available.

The brass peak and bowl showing some slight dents or distortions certainly commensurate with the age making this a very rare Helmet to find and ready to display.
