Original U.S. WWII Garrison Cap Named to Two Star Major General George S. Patton with Auction Receipt

Item Description

Original Item: One-of-a-kind. Acquired from the 50 year-old collection of an American recluse whose family wishes to remain anonymous. This is one item of about 150 named pieces of well-known American soldiers dating from WW1 and WW2. We have been fortunate to buy a few items from the initial release by his estate and hope to bring other items from this truly spectacular collection to the market.

This particular garrison cap, or side cap, we believe was made in England and nicely stamped into the leather headband is the maker's mark of the British Royal Coat of Arms and:

Tailored by

LEWIS

On the opposite side of the leather headband over the right ear stamped into the leather reads:

G. PATTON

The cap bears two-silvered metal General's Stars (Major General) and is in fine condition. We are not able to authenticate the double star badge as having belonged to General Patton (as it is not named, none were), but the badge is period correct and was attached to the cap at the time it went to auction in 1998, so we believe it to be his.

Accompanying this cap is a framed copy of the original Auction invoice dated March 19th, 1998 showing

LOT # 1006 as "Gen. G. Patton Garrison Hat, Major General / Tailored by Lewis", the total purchase price with commission was $2,612.50. Who say’s military collectibles aren't a more reliable investment than real estate or the stock market?

Most interestingly we include a photograph of George Patton Waters, grandson of WWII General George S. Patton, (a decorated Veteran in his own right) actually wearing this very side cap at a fundraising event for the "Indiana Military Museum" (visit http://indymilitary.com) after which he personally signed this very auction receipt with the following:

IF THE CAP FITS, AND IT DOES, WEAR IT

G. PATTON WATERS

He wrote that phrase because when we presented it to him, he said, I have the exact same size head as my Grandfather so if this doesn't fit, you’ll know it wasn't really his. Well, he slipped it on, and it fit perfectly!!!

All items are enclosed in a standard glass and wood frame display case showing a photograph of General Patton wearing a two star side cap and detailed photographs of the markings on the leather hatband.

This is an opportunity to own a piece of history with provenance and a personal family connection that will never be repeated.
