Original U.S. WWI Pioneers Identified Lieutenant Uniform Collection Set

Item Description

Original Items: Only One Set Available. This is a top condition original Uniform Set of-

LT. HARLEY BRONSON COOPER

Lt. Cooper was the last child of the Civil War Surgeon Dr. John Cooper founder of Cooper's Plains, New York.

The uniform consists of:

• Tunic bearing tailor's label of "Edwin Roff Dempsey" complete with all badges and insignia including medal ribbon.
• Two pairs matching Jodhpurs
• Putties
• Leather shin leggings
• Lieutenant side cap (overseas cap)
•

The tunic bears the correct Infantry cross rifles insignia with an added P denoting that this was a Pioneer outfit. The Pioneers were usually made up of white Officers and African-American other ranks and were responsible on heavy construction front line projects during WW1.

In one of the pockets we found a hand written note that appears to be a draft of a letter to another front line officer which reads as follows:-

From Snowball to Douglas,

Water and mud are increasing and becoming horrible.

The longer days, when they come will be most welcome,

especially to the Officers, who say the conditions are

impairing their efficiency.

The Other Ranks don't seem to mind so much.

Clearly, no doubt due to has African-American command, Lieutenant Cooper’s nick name was "snowball" and it is most interesting that the officer's all felt most inconvenienced by the awful muddy conditions and yet the other ranks were not.

Also included is an early WW1 photograph of an Enlisted man which we have been led to believe is Lt. Cooper soon after he joined up.

A great original Uniform Set from a known U.S. WW1 officer from an interesting command with fascinating documentation. Also included a Notarized Statement from the Virginia Dealer who had purchased this from the family authenticating the originality and history.
